In this corner, we ask people who have already bought the hottest new products to write down their impressions of them. I would be grateful if you could help me purchase photography equipment.
This time, we had a contribution from Takashi Iki, who purchased a Canon EOS R5 Mark II. (Editorial Department)
Takashi Iki
Representative of Landscape Design Company Limited. As a photographer, I am responsible for advertising photography for JR West, while also working with national and local governments to focus on regional revitalization works through photography with the unprecedented idea of transforming landscapes into resources (design).
It's been four years since the EOS R5 was released. The long-awaited “EOS R5 Mark II” has finally been released. For me, who has been using “5” cameras in a row since the days of SLRs, this is also the moment when I welcome a new companion, and it is also the time when my expectations for its development grow exponentially.
My first impression when I picked it up was the depth of the grip, which feels more comfortable in my hand, and the fact that the power switch has been moved to the right side when viewed from the back of the camera, making basic button operations you can now do with one hand, and you'll feel like you can “Getting where it itches.” A lock function has been added to the power switch, which can also be useful depending on the shooting situation.
Since I usually work as a landscape photographer, one of the points I personally consider is image quality, and I'm concerned about high-sensitivity and resolution performance.
What's especially noteworthy is that image quality has been further improved due to improvements in Canon's deep learning technology. I felt that even fine lines, which were slightly distorted when shooting against the light, were rendered very accurately and clearly.
*All examples have been resized to 1920px long side.
Here I would like to introduce two noteworthy functions that can be implemented within the camera.
The first is to upgrade your camera.
After shooting, the number of vertical and horizontal pixels is doubled, and the total number of pixels is quadrupled, making it possible to enlarge the image to approximately 179 million pixels. Unlike IBIS HD photography, since it is completed with a single image, it is great because it can create high-resolution natural images without losing details, and is also used for photographing large-scale posters and billboards for regular advertisements. I personally appreciate this feature. It will also be useful for large format printing in photo galleries. However, currently, the only saving format is JPEG. In terms of minor corrections and wider use, I think it would be more practical if it were possible to save RAW.

The second is to reduce neural network noise.
When developing the RAW format, it uses deep learning technology to create images with lower in-camera noise, which combines with the traditional high-sensitivity performance of the EOS R5 Mark II, which has the highest resolution among Canon products due to the effect. Image quality has improved to the point where you can shoot at ISO 12800 without any problems, although there used to be some resistance to shooting at ISO 6400 or higher. I haven't been able to take full advantage of it yet, but I'm sure it will show its capabilities in dark places and star photography, which I had previously given up on.
Shooting at ISO 12800 → Neural network noise reduction
Personally, I often photograph not only landscapes but also railways due to my work, and in this regard, I also pay attention to the remarkable development of the autofocus function.
The target detection response is fast and accurate, and the “tracking” is extremely excellent. When using Servo AF, just by adjusting this setting the camera will always follow the train with full area tracking, and I was very impressed by the fact that it can also support continuous shooting at different distances.
Furthermore, when using the virtual electronic shutter, you can shoot at approximately 30 frames per second. Shows amazing power when photographing moving objects.
In addition, the most prominent feature this time is the introduction of gaze.
If you preset it through metering, the AF area/frame will instantly move to where your line of sight is. This development is also a very useful feature for photographers, as they can instantly change the focus when photographing landscapes based on their judgment at the time.
The R5's picture quality has already received high praise, and the addition of new technology improves the work force.
The EOS R5 Mark II is a revolutionary camera that expands the scope of expression in landscape photography, combining consistently improved high image quality and high sensitivity with revolutionary autofocus performance.
