Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – In order to speed up local public transport, a new technology will be installed in Frankfurt next year. The Hesian State Transport Ministry has announced that digital train control technology called “Digital Train Control System” will be used for the first time in a German city. Vehicles and the road constantly exchange signals and messages.

The Frankfurt U-Bahn should be able to run at much shorter intervals. Some of the tracks are within their capacity, but digital technology should allow for more frequent iteration. Trains also have to be more energy efficient and more comfortable for passengers, because acceleration and braking are gentler. The system will also be used on the tram.

Work should start next year with the conversion of the first vehicles. According to the plans announced so far, all nine lines of the subway system will be converted to digital train protection by 2030. The project is also a prerequisite for integrated traffic control for the entire metropolitan area, the ministry said.

The Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt (VGF) project is funded by the federal and state governments at around €95 million. It is due to be presented by VGF General Manager Michael Rover and Transport Minister Tariq Al-Wazir (The Greens) on Monday (10am).
