Marienhospital Bottrop informs you: The latest techniques for knee replacement at MHB

MAKO (Robotic Arm Assisted Surgery) System – A revolutionary surgical assistance system is now in use at MHB.

Colleagues from different fields of work were invited and showed up for the first time to “get acquainted” with the Mako system. Not only surgeons had to adapt to the new surgical assistant, but the entire team had to be informed and trained.
Investing in the future, “With this we will improve the planning and precision of interventions,” says PD Dr. Daniel Schmitz (Chief Physician Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery). “This also means more safety and faster recovery for our patients.”

Where is Mako used?
Robotic technology is used when inserting knee joints.
This innovative system is equipped with a stereoscopic camera and a robotic arm to guide the devices. Reflective markers are placed on the upper and lower leg bones. In addition, the bony surface of the knee joint is drawn with a marker. This creates a virtual image of the joint surface in the software. The system also accurately measures the ligament tension when the knee joint is extended and flexed.
This effectively determines the optimal position and alignment of the implants in the knee joint.
Individual planning is then carried out precisely: the robot arm guides the saw to create the resulting bone pieces.
“This makes the fit of the prosthesis very precise,” says Dr. Daniel Schmitz, MD.

He has experience with Mako. Dr. med. Islam El Hanawy, Head of the Artificial Joints Center At MHB – already collected. He knows robotic surgical technology and has already performed surgeries with it.
The Mako system will be used at the Marienhospital Bottrop from autumn.
We are very excited and pleased to be able to offer this new procedure at MHB.
We will advise you on this during our consultation hours. Contact: 02041/106-1401
