Microsoft will end mainstream support for Microsoft Office 2019 on October 10 US time. Additionally, support for communications from Office 2016/2019 to Microsoft 365 services will end on the same day.
After core support ends, only Office 2019 will be provided with extended support for 3 years (usually 5 years). During the extended support period, you will receive free security updates and paid technical support. In the meantime, I would consider moving on to a later product.
Additionally, the perpetual version of Microsoft Office that can be connected to Microsoft 365 services is limited to versions in mainstream support. In other words, the perpetual version of Office will no longer support connections to Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, etc. after the dates listed below.
- Microsoft 365 apps: Can be connected as long as you’re using a supported version
- LTSC Office 2021: October 13, 2026
- Office 2019: October 10, 2023
- Office 2016: October 10, 2023
As of October 13, 2020, Office 2016 has already ended mainstream support. It is currently in the extended support phase, but as a special case, connectivity is supported until October 10, 2023.
Older Office apps that are past their expiration date will no longer be actively blocked from Microsoft 365 services, so they will no longer be available immediately, but compatibility and testing will no longer be maintained. As a result, performance may suddenly decrease, the connection may become unstable, or you may not be able to connect at all.
I’d like to consider migrating to the latest one-time purchase version, Office 2021, or migrating to the Microsoft 365 subscription app as soon as possible.
The timeline for ending support for current Microsoft Office products is as follows.
the current | Extended support | |
---|---|---|
Office 2013 | April 10, 2018 (ends) | April 11, 2023 |
Office 2016 | October 13, 2020 (ends) | October 14, 2025 |
Office 2019 | October 10, 2023 (end) | October 14, 2025 (3 years only) |
Office 2021 | October 13, 2026 | (no one) |
