Linux 6.10 Kernel Officially Released – ZDNET Japan

Linux creator Linux Torvalds announced on July 14, US time, that Linux kernel 6.10 is ready for release to the general public. Version 6.10 isn't the most important kernel released recently, but it does add some new features.

One of the most notable features of the Linux 6.10 kernel is a system call called mseal(). Work on mseal() was first announced on January 31, and Jeff It protects the virtual memory area “VMA''.

Starting with the Linux kernel 2.6.8 released in 2004, Linux supports the NX (non-executable) bit, which protects memory from memory corruption errors that allow attackers to write data and inject code into arbitrary memory. At that time, the kernel described memory permissions within a data structure called VMA (vm_area_struct). The newly added memory sealing feature helps mitigate memory corruption issues, such as when an attacker uses read-only memory to bypass control flow consistency (and thus become trusted and writable).

Another new feature allows encrypted interactions using the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). This functionality is very effective against external eavesdropping and packet modification attacks. It also ensures system security after boot by authenticating empty original values. For more information about “tpm-security.rst”,Posted by James Bottomley on kernel.orgI want you to read it.

Security improvements have also been made by removing features. The feature that will be removed is the “Encryption Usage Statistics” feature because it is not used (maybe never used). Regarding this decision,Report by Eric BiggersPlease take a look.

As for supported devices, many products have been added as before. For example, new drivers for ASUSTeK Computer's 2024 ROG series, Lenovo's ThinkPad 13x Gen 4, Microsoft's Surface, Acer's Aspire 1, GEEKOM's A8 series, Intel IPU6 (for webcams on laptops starting with Tiger Lake), NZXT's Kraken and Kraken Elite CPU coolers released in 2023, and Aqua Computer's OCTO fan controller.

Also, regarding Bluetooth, the Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE201 and Wi-Fi 6E module MediaTek Filogic 330 (MT7922) are supported.

Additionally, several gaming improvements have been made, including the G5 Pro series of wireless controllers from Machenike, the inertial motion sensor from Steam Deck, the GameForce Chi, and the H700 from Allwinner Technology (portable gaming platform).

Your current distribution will likely start updating to 6.10 soon. We highly recommend waiting for updates rather than downloading and installing this kernel manually. Upgrading from your distribution's default repositories should ensure that this kernel works with your latest release.
