Kaspersky controversy: Revealing the use of artificial intelligence in Russian military drones

GRAZ/MUNICH (IT BOLTWISE) – The well-known cybersecurity company Kaspersky is involved in a controversial debate. Kaspersky's technology has reportedly been used in Russian military drones, which has both civilian and military implications.

A volunteer group called Informnapalm has made claims that Kaspersky's AI technologies have been used to develop Russian drones in the Ukrainian conflict. These drones are able to identify people using cameras and microphones. Kaspersky has strongly denied these allegations, saying they are baseless and false.

The controversy was sparked by documents indicating a link between Kaspersky and the drone manufacturer Albatross. Kaspersky's neural network technology allegedly played a central role in the development of these technologies. However, Kaspersky emphasizes that cooperation with Albatross was limited to the laboratory level and was intended primarily for humanitarian purposes.

The report notes that despite the official distancing, former and current Kaspersky employees were involved in Albatross. These engineers include Vladimir Turov and Vladimir Klishnin, whose collaboration with Albatross is said to predate their time at Kaspersky.

The company also stressed that the existing counter-drone solutions distribution agreement with Albatross, which expired in 2022, never went beyond purely defensive measures. However, InformnaPalm's claims, based on stolen documents, cast a dim light on the potential use of these technologies in the military sector.
