John Malkovich sings in Budapest: The two-time Academy Award-nominated American actor will take to the stage at the Erkel Theater on October 2 with a musical version of The Music Critic.
During the event, the most famous pieces of classical music will be performed, and between each piece John Malkovich will perform the most fierce quotes and opinions from contemporary critics, the organizers said in a statement to MTI. As they explained, the world premiere with a symphony orchestra will show the entertainment side of classical music with John Malkovich accompanied by Alexei Egodesman and the Danubia Ubuda Orchestra.
For more than 30 years, John Malkovich has been one of the most famous actors in the world, as well as one of the most important theater actors of our time, appearing in theatrical productions in Hungary on a number of occasions, the statement said.
Quotes from the review of the piece “Music Critic”: Schumann imagines him to be a “composer,” Brahms “a bastard without talent” and Claude Debussy “terrible to listen to” – these brief phrases come from reviews from centuries past compiled by Alexei Igodesman, a Russian-German violinist and composer, To show in an entertainment production that the opinions of contemporaries did not hold.
The production, which is based on classical music, stage performances, and authors, premiered in 2017 – at the time with the Chamber Orchestra – and has been a worldwide hit ever since.
In the play, John Malkovich slips into the role of the sinister critic convinced that Beethoven, Chopin, Prokofiev, and their companions are boring and unhappy. But Alexei Egodesman and the members of the orchestra are ready to disagree and fight. In the final scene, Malkovich is “hooked” next — to Malkovich’s own criticism, according to the production description.
On October 2, the expanded and revised premiere of “The Music Critic” in Budapest will feature not just a few musicians, but an entire symphony orchestra in a music debate with John Malkovich. The nearly two-hour program includes works by composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, Schumann, Debussy, Prokofiev, Wessay, Kanchelli, Piazzola, and Egodesmann. The play has been translated into Hungarian.
The ad states that it is not without reason that the Danubia Orchestra will be the partner of the American artist, as it is close to experimenting with musical genres and presenting works of the twentieth century and the present, and is looking forward to the second joint performance with John. Happy Malkovich. The orchestra previously performed with the artist on Report on the Blind in 2018.
