The documentary, which was shown on Tuesday, Focuses on Lopez’s career From leaving home at age 18 until Performing at President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021.
At one point, the “Let’s Get Loud” singer and her mother, Lupe, said they were arguing a lot.
“She did what she had to do to survive, make her strong, but also made her tough,” Lopez said. “You beat the shit out of us.”
Then Loeb said, “I was far from a perfect mother. The only thing I can always say, everything I did, I did with their best interests at heart.”
In the documentary, Lopez explained that her mother was “too complicated” but wanted to raise the singer and her two sisters to avoid being dependent on men.
Loeb said, “I’ve always had the highest expectations from them. It wasn’t critical. It was just to show that you could do better. And Jennifer, she gave me the hardest time, to tell you the truth. We butcher heads a lot.”
Elsewhere in the documentary, Lopez also explained that she had to leave home at the age of 18 after a fight with her mother.
The “Hustlers” actress said her love of dancing distracted her from school, causing tension with Lupe.
“My mom was like, ‘If you’re going to live in this house, you’re going to get your education,'” Lopez said. “We got into a bad fight one night and she just left.”

Lopez said in the documentary that It was the “worst idea in the world” to have two artists lead the way.
