Police and security associations launched Burglary Protection Day to raise awareness of security measures. Especially in the fall and winter months, thieves take advantage of the early evening hours to attack buildings that are not adequately secured. In 2023, police in Germany recorded about 77,800 burglaries, which represents a significant increase compared to previous years.
Surveillance of large buildings such as office complexes, commercial properties, or industrial facilities poses special challenges for security technology. Conventional systems often reach their limits because they cannot guarantee reliable signal transmission in remote or inaccessible areas such as underground parking lots or covered rooms. These areas represent potential security vulnerabilities that criminals specifically exploit. To date, there is no advanced technical solution to effectively monitor these areas.
Internet of Things-based security systems
IoT-based security systems provide a new opportunity here. Products like this IoT motion detector from Lupus-Electronics Work independently of existing networks and enable seamless monitoring even in hard-to-reach parts of the building. The motion detector is equipped with a permanently installed SIM card and uses Deutsche Telekom's narrowband IoT network to transmit alarm messages in real time. These notifications are forwarded via Lupus Cloud via push notification, email or direct forwarding to emergency control centers – without connecting to local networks.
IoT technology offers high scalability and is therefore ideal for use in larger building complexes.
The device acts as an infrared barrier: at a narrow angle of 5 degrees, the built-in Optex technology detects people at a distance of up to five meters and distinguishes between people, animals and objects. This reduces false alarms. Thanks to low power consumption, the device's battery life is up to 1.5 years, reducing maintenance requirements.
In addition to IoT technology, modern smart home systems like the Lupus XT4 can be integrated with other security elements such as video surveillance, vibration detectors or door/window touchpoints. These modular solutions allow flexible adaptation to the specific requirements of the property in question.
