Balaji Kanigicherla, Vice President of Intel and General Manager of Dedicated Computing at the Accelerated Computing and Graphics Systems Group, explains the background to this development: “Momentum around the blockchain continues to increase. It is paving the way for decentralized and distributed computing and paving the way for innovative business models.”

To power this new era of computing, Intel offers technology that can provide the optimal balance between data throughput and energy efficiency, regardless of the customer’s operating environment. “Intel’s decades of research and development in cryptography, hashing technologies, and ultra-low-voltage circuits enable blockchain applications to extend their computing power without compromising sustainability.”

This is important because the demand for processing power for blocks that take advantage of Proof of Work consensus mechanisms is growing rapidly due to their flexibility and scalability without sacrificing decentralization. This growing pool of computing power requires an enormous amount of power, requiring new computing technologies that can deliver the required power in a more energy-efficient manner, while also being robust enough to mitigate the long-term e-waste problem.

Dedicated to cryptocurrency

Intel Blockscale ASIC is designed for Proof of Work algorithms compatible with ASIC-based systems and SHA-256 hashing to provide the energy efficiency and computing power required for scalability and sustainability. Given the type of silicon powering this technology, Intel will be able to ship it in bulk without affecting its supply of new CPUs or GPUs, the company says.

The method is used specifically for cryptocurrencies. Jose Rios, General Manager of Blockchain Technology and Business Solutions at Intel’s Accelerated Computing and Graphics Systems Group, added, “Intel is committed to developing blockchain technology in a responsible manner, and we are proud to partner with companies and… to provide solutions for them will create a more sustainable cryptocurrency ecosystem around the world.” “ASIC will play an important role in helping bitcoin miners achieve their hashing and sustainability scaling goals in the coming years.”

Key features of Intel Blockscale ASIC include:

  • Dedicated ASIC processor for Secure Hash Algorithm 256 (SHA-256)
  • Operational hash rate of up to 580 GHz and up to 26 joules/hour of energy efficiency
  • On-chip temperature and voltage sensing capabilities
  • Support up to 256 integrated circuits per chain
  • Reference hardware design and software suite to help customers begin system development.

Availability

Intel Blockscale ASIC deliveries to customers will begin in the third quarter of 2022, according to the company. Argo Blockchain and Block Inc. Hive Blockchain Technologies and Griid Infrastructure are among the first to develop new systems based on it. Beginning in 2023, Intel will partner with and provide to potential customers who share the company’s sustainability goals.
