Cooperation between “Amperial” and the public utility company Hearn

Innovative technology in the testing process

In order to test the innovative window film for building cooling, Stadtwerke Herne is collaborating with the technology start-up “Amperial Technologies” from Nuremberg. In the first phase of the cooperation, a series of tests are currently taking place at the Municipal Utilities Administration building in Grenzweig. The effect of the film on room temperature and thus on potential energy savings is measured under real conditions.

The problem is well known: climate change is making summers hotter. This poses increasing challenges for companies in particular. Because heat puts a strain on employees' health, it's often difficult to adjust air conditioning systems and energy consumption as well. Traditional solutions such as external blinds are less effective, make rooms dark and often require extensive maintenance.

Reflects heat radiation on hot days

Amperial, a subsidiary of the Department of Materials Science at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, has developed the so-called photovoltaic window film. Based on innovative nano technology, it reflects heat radiation at the touch of a button on hot days without darkening rooms. Heat and glare protection can also be combined if necessary. On cold days, the film can be “turned off” again at the push of a button so that the required thermal radiation enters the building to reduce heating energy.

The film can be easily adjusted and does not require a power connection. Amperial expects a temperature drop of up to seven degrees and up to 25 percent less cooling energy. “This means that film can be a suitable addition to our energy services. Whether cooling or heating, we can design all systems in an optimized way so that our customers' investments in energy efficiency can be amortized more quickly,” emphasizes Stadtwerke Board Member Ulrich Koch.

Small prototypes

The partners are currently testing smaller prototypes of window films with continuous measurements using highly sensitive sensors. After evaluation and improvement, in the second phase, entire rooms will be equipped in municipal facilities.

“Partnering with municipal utilities represents an important step on our path towards implementing sustainable innovations,” emphasizes Matthias Troost, Managing Director of Amperial. “Together we want not only to reduce energy consumption, but also to improve people's quality of life. With our innovative technology, we are creating a solution that advances the energy transition and revolutionizes everyday life in modern buildings.”
