Historic baseball field used in 'A League of Their Own' destroyed by fire

A part of Hollywood history has disappeared.

Jay Littleton Ballpark, located in Ontario, California, where scenes from the classic movie “A League of Their Own” were filmed, was destroyed in a fire that broke out Thursday night.

Ontario Fire Department participated Statement on social media The first fire engine responded to the scene at around 11:30 p.m. local time, with additional resources requested to combat the fire, which was first spotted in the wooden stands.

51 individuals worked to extinguish the fire, and search operations confirmed that no victims were found.

The fire department also noted that the cause is “still under investigation.”

The stadium's all-wood grandstands were built in 1937, and the facility has been used regularly by amateur leagues over the years, hosting only one professional team, the Ontario Orioles, in 1947.

Her historical appearances have led to her fame in photography, most notably the 1992 classic “A League of Their Own,” starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna, and directed by Penny Marshall.

According to Aaron Mathisen, president of the Eastern Ontario Junior League, in an interview with A B C 7, “The field right here on the third base line is where Tom Hanks famously said, 'There's no crying in baseball!'”

Matthiessen also said, Fox 11 Homelessness has been an ongoing problem in the park.

“We have ongoing issues with homeless people in the park,” he told the newspaper. “In the past, they've broken into the building and cut the gas line so they can get their own gas… It's fallen into disarray, and unfortunately I think that's what happened.”

The Ontario Fire Department and the City of Ontario did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

Other popular films filmed in the park include “Eight Men Out” starring John Cusack, “The Babe Ruth Story,” and most recently the Amazon Prime TV series “A League of Their Own.”

“We are thrilled to be working with Ontario,” said Dan Bell, Ontario’s communications director. Entertainment Weekly, “It’s a huge loss to our community. Everyone here either played or had relatives or children who played on this field over the years. In the 87 years it’s been around, a lot of people have played on this field.”

Bale also explained that the stadium is intact, but the stands are completely gone. He told the newspaper: “We will have to look at what we do with this stadium in the future. As it is an important part of the history of our city, we will look at how we move forward with it.”
