Family games are rarely mentioned in my reviews, but “The Wandering Towers” by Abacus Spiele made me more curious not only because of the beautifully illustrated cover, but also the fact that it is possible to play 2 to 6 players.

These 2 to 6 players, ages 8 and up, try to send all the wizards to Rabenburg during the 30 minute playing time and fill all the magic potion bottles on the way there. The first game taught us that the latter should be thought of early on, but more on that later.

The number of wizards that must be sent to Rabenburg varies depending on the number of players. A small, if no less positive, aspect here is that there are actually only two colors with five magicians each, because the two-player variant determines this. It’s often the little things that get us going in the direction of #sustainability.

The magicians move clockwise in a circle of 16 squares. You are moved by playing up to two cards of your hand per turn. Towers can also be moved with the help of these hand cards. In addition to the cards for moving the wizard and the cards in hand that are only for the towers, there are also cards in which you have to select the item you want to move. The numbers printed on the cards or the number rolled on the dice are relevant for this.

So what at first seems like a race to Raven’s Castle is given an interesting level of interaction by the fact that witches can be trapped by a moving tower. If you imprison one or more witches when moving a tower, you can fill a magical potion bottle.

Now it’s up to everyone to keep an eye on which of their constellations are the #wizards in order to free them back in time. Filled magic potion bottles can also be used for magic spells, so you can expand your inventory of possible moves in one go.

In our first two-player game, it turns out that it’s really important to take care of filling potion bottles early. We didn’t think about it in the first match and suddenly had the problem that all the magicians were in Rabbenburg, but we could no longer fill the magic bottles.

“The Wandering Towers” is a #fun game even for two people, but the more players there are, the higher the interaction factor and therefore the #fun as well.

The 30 minute playtime was often exceeded, but it didn’t spoil our fun in any way.

Thus “The Wandering Towers” is a game that finds its way into our game wardrobe because it always offers an interesting and entertaining conclusion to a nice evening of gaming.
