The young Baroque specialists of the Gellert Ensemble let the oratorio “Bückeburger Bach” shine in the splendor of color.
Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, son of Johann Sebastian and his second wife Anna Magdalena, set out the story of Lazarus, who according to the Gospel of John is a friend of Jesus, who personally allows him to rise from the grave, at Bockberg’s request. Countess Maria Barbara Eleonore zu Libby-Bisterfeld when their twin brother died at the age of 27. The Gellert Ensemble, in which young Baroque musicians have been coming together on a project basis since 2015 to perform works by composers from Central Germany, mainly from the second half of the 18th century, has recorded the oratorio “The Resurrection of Lazarus”. The focus is on solo parts (Maria, Martha, Jesus, Lazarus) with arias, duets, trios, and recitatives. The large choirs and moving chorales that characterize Bach’s father’s oratorios are receding behind them in Johann Christoph Friedrich, but they nonetheless develop to great effect. With the Gellert Ensemble under the direction of Andreas Mitschke, everything is in good hands.
