NvidiaGeForce RTX 4090“teethVery high performanceAlthough it's a large graphics board, it also faces the problem of being “too big.” One PC expert went on record for installing a GeForce RTX 4090 on a PC by “drilling a hole in the PC case and passing the riser cable through it.”TANIL POWERPosted by Mr.

GeForce RTX 4090 is the flagship model of NVIDIA's consumer graphics board, providing extremely high performance for gaming, AI processing, etc. The GeForce RTX 4090 also has the advantage of 'very large board size', for example, ASUS' original fan model 'TUF-RTX4090-24G-GAMINGDimensions: 348.2mm x 150mm x 72.6mm.
The dedicated slot is a 3.65 slot, which is difficult to install unless you have a fairly large computer case.
Mr. Buder had a “GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition (hereinafter referred to as GeForce RTX 4090)” and was using it by integrating it into the PC case, but “if you integrate the GeForce RTX 4090, there will be no space for the SSD and network card. I experienced issues like “overheating and annoying fan noise”.
The method adopted by Mr. Bouder to solve the problem was to “change the mounting position of the GeForce RTX 4090 using an elevated cable.” Changing the position and orientation of the graphics board with a mounting cable is a common customization for homebrew users, but Poder chose “outside the PC case” as the mounting location for the GeForce RTX 4090. In other words, place the GeForce RTX 4090 outside the PC case, and drill a hole in the PC case profile, and connect the motherboard and graphics board using a mounting cable.
Mr. Bauder didn't have a serious tool like a grinder, so he first used an electric drill to drill a row of holes in the PC case board. In addition, the reason for the surrounding darkness is that “I decided to quickly start working late at night.”
Below are the holes drilled with an electric drill.
Next, use a chisel and hammer to enlarge the hole you created with the electric drill.
The completed hole looks like this. Mr. Bouder describes this vulnerability as “the most dangerous PCIe eGPU port in the world.”
This is what it looks like when you put blue insulating tape on “the world's most dangerous PCIe eGPU port” and extend the riser cable from the motherboard.
To avoid stress on the riser cable, the GeForce RTX 4090 is positioned off the ground using a piece of exercise mat.
Below is a movie recording the first power on after connecting the GeForce RTX 4090 externally. You can check that the fans and LEDs are working properly.

To prevent hair or foreign objects from getting into the GeForce RTX 4090 fan, cover it with the All-Important Waste Bin and you're done.
Mr. Bouder has been running the GeForce RTX 4090 out of the PC box for 5 months, but hasn't had any issues. The heat issue inside the GeForce RTX 4090 unit and PC case appears to have been resolved as well.
Additionally, Mr. Buder isn't the first to come up with the idea of ”drilling a hole in a PC case and running a riser cable through it,” and some Japanese homebrew users are making similar modifications to take their graphics tablets outside the home.
The example below looks very elegant.
