The MS-DOS 6.22 command-line operating system was the last standalone release before Microsoft used the “disk-only operating system” as the base for Windows 95, 98, and ME. Retro enthusiast Yeo Kheng Meng has now presented a current PC that can run Doom, Planet X3, Descent, and even ChatGPT on it.
The command line is based on the Ryzen 5 7600 and Geforce RTX 4060 Ti
Since Yeo Kheng Meng's old gaming computer no longer met his needs, new hardware was needed. However, hardware designers and PC enthusiasts wanted to combine old-fashioned computing with modernity by bundling a computer with a floppy disk drive and PS/2 port alongside existing hardware. The Ryzen 5 7600 integrated as a CPU and the Geforce RTX 4060 Ti with 16GB of video memory are of course only high-end hardware, but they are sufficient for Yeo Kheng Meng's use cases.
In one YouTube video Now the PC enthusiast shows how to play old classics like Doom and Planet X3 with sound under MS-DOS 6.22. Yeo Kheng Meng also shows off the game Descent, which, however, is calculated too quickly by modern hardware for her to play. The sound works thanks to the open source project SBEMU (Sound Blaster Emulator) and also thanks to the Internet, which Meng impressively demonstrates by giving a command-line version of ChatGPT for MS-DOS using some prompts.
The PC components that Yeo Kheng Meng installed in his backwards-compatible gaming and machine learning PC, in addition to the hardware he already owned, are the following:
- AMD Ryzen 5 7600 3.8 GHz AM5
- Asus Dual GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EVO OC 16GB graphics card
- ASUS Pro B650M-CT-CSM motherboard
- 2 x 32GB DDR5-5600 CL36 Kingston Fury
- Coolermaster Hyper 212 Spectrum V3 CPU cooler
- 1TB NVME Crucial T500
