Formula E – Formula E announces: Fast charging will only be discontinued in 2024

Formula E has abandoned the idea of discontinuing fast charging for the current 2023 season and now plans to introduce the so-called fast charging technology only from the upcoming tenth Formula E season. Originally, the plan was to tackle the concept before the end of the year.

But what is the real reason behind the “attack charge” as it is called? Essentially, this is a mandatory pit stop, where the driver recharges four kilowatt-hours of energy within 30 seconds. It was to become a tactical vehicle – similar to the vehicle change that was necessary at the time with the first generation of vehicles.

Formula E planned to test the system in select races in 2023, but delivery bottlenecks kept pushing it backwards. Now it has been decided that he will only come in the tenth season.

“We’ll wait until next year and then do it right,” confirms general manager Jimmy Riggle at a media tour that was also attended by Motorsport-Total.com.

“We would have loved to have it this season, but I don’t think it’s possible at the moment,” says Formula E co-founder Alberto Luongo. Because even if the technology is supposed to be up and running now and tested before the season, there are still issues with delivery. When these are fixed, it is too late to submit.

Because teams push for fair competition and stable regulations during the season. “It would have a big impact on the form and then just using it for three or four final races might not be the right decision – even if we could do it,” said Longo.

But he also stresses that Formula E is “in no hurry” in this regard: “We have the technology and it works, but there are currently problems with supply chains everywhere and that’s why we haven’t been able to do it this year.”

“But if he doesn’t come, he will come in the first race of season 10,” Longo promises. “We’re going to adjust our athletic form a bit, as we aim to do every year, to keep getting better.”
