Feel Bad Funnies by Mahler in our comic book review – Tower

As a cartoonist, you must be a keen observer of your surroundings and people so that you always have your finger on the pulse. It is not uncommon for these artists to address current events and create a short strip or painting that satirizes world events. Austrian comedian Nicola Mahler is one such cartoonist, although his work goes much further and he has also directed longer stories.

Some readers may know one of his previous cartoon books or clips from newspapers and magazines such as “Die Zeit”, “NZZ am Sonntag”, “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung” and the satirical magazine “Titanic”. Edition Moderne has now published another mini-volume of his cartoons, titled “Feel Bad Funnies.” These are short cartoons of a few pages, sometimes just one drawing per gag, dealing with daily events over the past few years. Sometimes the words are manipulated or reinterpreted, and sometimes the dialogues contradict the picture drawn, and this in turn raises contradiction in the reader.

Mahler has already received many awards. Among other things, he won the Max and Moritz Prize in 2010 as “Best German-Speaking Comedian” and the Literaturhaus Prize in 2015. His line is always very rudimentary and shows as much as is required to create and pull off the joke and the setting.

Some of the cartoons in “Feel Bad Funnies” come with alternate endings. Sometimes there are many possible bottom lines for a creative animation production. Mahler presents some of them here, set directly after the original cartoon. Then the reader can decide which line he likes best.
