This man came to complain: having lost his job, pouring gasoline on himself and setting his wife on fire out of sheer desperation, and robbing the office of his children, the unskilled Serbian worker Nikola (Goran Bogdan) sets off for the responsible ministry for Belgrade. Since he has no money for the bus, he walks 300 kilometers for five days.
Serbian Serdan Golubović was inspired by the true story of his feature film “Father – Otak”: Serbian media quoted the father seeking justice from whom the children were taken. So the director and screenwriter went to the ministry and talked to the real model of his movie. “I realized there was something very special about the story, something so inspiring and cinematic, a kind of ‘Paris, Texas’ novel like the one written in the Balkans,” Golubovich said.
But his film is also reminiscent of the directorial work of British class warrior Ken Loach: it also tells of the poorest of the poor in a country that is crumbling architecturally, economically and socially. He does not need many words for this, it is enough to look at the weary face of his outstanding lead actor: Croatian Goran Bogdan is a famous film and television actor in his homeland, but he was also seen in the third season of the American series “Fargo”.
