First, here are the results of the comprehensive review.
ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition Full Review
A gaming smartphone with the latest cutting-edge features.
The processor is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The ROG Phone 8 Pro has 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage, while the newer ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition has 24GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage.
The battery capacity is 5500mAh, and the USB power supply supports 65W fast charging. Wireless charging (up to 15W) is also available. When I set the screen to maximum brightness and continued to play a 4K video on YouTube over Wi-Fi, it took about 10 hours and 25 minutes to reach 0% brightness, so I can say that the endurance is very high.
The screen uses a 6.78-inch organic liquid crystal panel (2400 x 1080 pixels). The peak brightness is 2500 cd/m2, and the refresh rate is up to 165Hz, allowing you to play games with high-quality images even on your smartphone.
The power button and volume rocker are placed on the right side of the main unit, and the bottom is equipped with both the Type-C connectors and the headphone jack. There is also a Type-C terminal on the left side of the main unit, so you can charge from there as well. This is because charging with the terminal on the bottom of the main unit when gaming in landscape mode interferes with the grip and gets in the way, a design familiar to the ROG phone series.
The Type-C terminal on the left side of the main unit can also be used when installing an external cooler “AeroActive Cooler X”.
Active air cooler
The cooling performance uses the “360° SoC Cooling System Gen 2” which cools the SoC
from all directions, improving thermal efficiency by 22% compared to the previous model. The external cooling unit “AeroActive Cooler
*SoC: System on a Chip. It's easy to understand if you think of it as the central processing unit in a smartphone.
Unfortunately, starting from this time, you can no longer connect an external cooler and a controller at the same time (Tsukune).
You can adjust performance mode, display refresh rate, notification function, call rejection, macros, etc. while playing.
The AniMe Vision LED on the back also shows originality, making it a gem that satisfies your desire to own it (Nakayama).
You can set the battery level that will be displayed while charging and the equalizer that will be displayed while playing music. You can also create your own designs and animations.
- Despite its gaming name, the main camera is a full-fledged triple-lens camera. The configuration is as follows.
- 50 million pixel wide-angle camera (35mm equivalent: 23.8mm equivalent / F-value 1.9)
- 13MP Ultra Wide Angle Camera (35mm equivalent: 12.7mm equivalent / F2.2 value)
32MP telephoto camera (35mm equivalent: 65.3mm equivalent / F2.4 value)
The main wide-angle camera is equipped with a 6-axis gimbal 3.0, which provides powerful image stabilization. These specifications are very promising not only for gaming but also for photography. Let me give you some examples.
The big difference from previous models is the inclusion of FeliCa. In other words, you can use Osaifu-Keitai. Many gaming smartphones don't come with FeliCa, so it was necessary to set up a separate smartphone to use Osaifu-Keitai, but with the ROG Phone 8 Pro, you can use one device for both gaming and everyday use.
The mobile connectivity is 5G and supports both sub-6 and millimeter waves. However, the SIM slot is nanoSIM x 2 and does not support eSIM. If you are an eSIM user and want to change the model, you will need to issue a physical SIM card. It also supports Wi-Fi 6E.
In addition to its powerful gaming features and performance, the ROG Phone 8 Pro is equipped with essential features for everyday use as a smartphone, such as a high-quality camera and Osaifu-Keitai, making it a product that can be said to be the perfect product. The gaming smartphone is done at this point.
Finally, the sales information. The ROG Phone 8 Pro is priced at 179,800 yen, while the limited edition ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition, which comes with a custom external cooler “AeroActive Cooler X” and has increased internal memory and storage, is priced at 219,800 yen. The ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition is currently out of stock at the ASUS Store and other retailers.
2 minutes walk from North Exit: 8 pointsI was surprised that it suddenly started a sci-fi tutorial when I started it up, but it works fine as a gaming smartphone and doesn’t stutter even when I’m using the latest games and YouTube at the same time. As expected, it gets quite hot when gaming while charging, but the external cooler is a real cooling fan, so if you use them together, the temperature drops quite nicely. It would be nice if there was a setting so that it would be muted by default and only have sound in certain apps.
Zhongshan Zhe: 9 amAs far as high-spec and sharp smartphones go, it is arguably the pinnacle of the smartphone experience at the moment. The AniMe Vision LED on the back also shows originality, making it a gem that satisfies your desire to own it. However, if you want to show off the rear LED or attach accessories like a cooling fan, you cannot use a case to protect the device. The trade-off for people who want to play with something powerful and attractive is that they will have to be careful when carrying it.
Count Tsukune: 9 points
The latest model in the ROG Phone series that embodies power. The processor is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with 24GB of memory, and the battery capacity is 5500mAh and supports 65W fast charging, making it very powerful. As a public transportation worker, I am very satisfied that it is compatible with the long-awaited Osaifu-Keitai. It is good that it has two USB ports, so it is easy to play vertically and horizontally. However, it is unfortunate that you can no longer connect the cooler and the controller at the same time.
