Engineering/Technology: 67 teams from 24 countries at the ETH Zurich Cybathlon in Kloten ZH

67 teams from 24 countries took part in the ETH Zurich Cybathlon this weekend. The competition puts everyday assistive techniques for people with disabilities to the test.

The third edition of the Cybathlon was held at the Swiss Arena in Kloten ZH and in seven local centers around the world, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich announced on Sunday. The centers are located in Canada, Hungary, Korea, Thailand, South Africa and the United States of America. There were 6,000 spectators in Kloten, and 15,500 people followed the competitions virtually.

Switzerland participated with nine teams in the Cybathlon, four of them from ETH Zurich. Additional teams traveled from Europe, Asia and Africa, and ten teams from the centers joined. Eight specializations focus on the best interaction between people and technology.

There have been virtual races with mind control, bike races with electrical muscle stimulation, or training courses with prosthetic arms, leg prosthetics, robotic exoskeletons or wheelchairs, ETH writes. For the first time, the Visual Assistance Technology Course and the Assistive Robotics Race were held.

The Cybathlon is expected to be held in Asia in 2028.
