Billionaire Elon Musk said on Monday that he would ban Apple devices in his companies if the iPhone maker integrated OpenAI at the operating system level.
“This is an unacceptable security violation,” Musk, CEO of electric car maker Tesla and rocket maker SpaceX and owner of social media company X, said in a tweet. Share on X.
He added: “Visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage.”
Apple and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
Earlier today, Apple announced a slew of AI features across its apps and platforms and a partnership with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT technology to its devices.
Apple said it built AI with privacy “at its core” and will use a combination of on-device processing and cloud computing to power those features.
“It is patently ridiculous that Apple is not smart enough to make its own AI, but is somehow able to ensure that OpenAI protects your security and privacy!” Musk said on X.
At the beginning of March, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, which he co-founded in 2015, and its CEO Sam Altman, saying they had abandoned the startup's original mission to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity rather than for profit.
Musk also founded his startup xAI, in an attempt to challenge OpenAI and build an alternative to the viral chatbot ChatGPT.
xAI was valued at $24 billion in its latest funding round, raising $6 billion in Series B funding.
