Electropop from “Post Neo”: Cool as Buddha

It gets dark when you start Post Neo, dark but uncomfortable. The gloom settles like a heavy blanket over your ears. Dark green and disappear from under it: a subtle escape from the world. “Run, run, run, we all run,” sang Pauline Wee and Nicole Logan, and they sound pretty awesome, so you don’t want to attribute too much of your daily struggle to them.

Music to listen endlessly

The two came from Munich and Mexico, found each other in Berlin, and worked on their synthesizers for three years – and now they’ve made their stellar debut. Five songs that were definitely worth it. And it’s all back and forth, especially in the two years that Nicole has been living in Mexico again. A distant binary, so to speak, connected digitally. Vote and buzz via email, vote in a video call. This transatlantic collaboration was “a little complicated,” says Pauline, “but somehow very funny.”

Anyway, you succeeded. “Post Neo” not only makes perfectly produced electro-pop, but also music that you can listen to endlessly. Which is still amazingly contradictory. Spherical mixes with technodem, floating melodies with the spoken word. And sometimes gloom gives way to motto.

Small pause, big clarity

“We don’t have to do anything / We’re allowed to do everything” the two chant in the song “We’re Leaving” yet not letting it sound like a protest, but as if they’re articulating the bigger issue of course. A little pause and a lot of clarity – this gesture can “spread new”. Gentle Sovereign. You could see this for yourself in Munich for the first time in December, when the two performed at the Fraunhofer Theater and pulled off such a look with black existential elegance.

If you wish for something in the new year: more of it! At least Nicole is back in Germany. Even parties are possible. Bolin says there are also plans to follow up the EP with a debut album. Until then, you should probably exercise restraint in Post Neo: “We’re happy to wait / We have time.”
