Cloud gaming is becoming increasingly popular. Microsoft has been offering its internal Xbox Cloud Gaming in beta since 2019. Sony also wants to give its subscribers the opportunity to stream games.
Preview of this new functionality started on August 9th. It allows users to stream games in 4K on the console instead of installing them. However, this requires a special subscription. With its 4K resolution, Sony has a huge advantage over rival Microsoft. Their cloud service only offers a maximum resolution of 1080p. Sony’s cloud gaming testing should continue for a few more months before it officially starts in March 2024 at the latest. The feature is currently available exclusively to Playstation 5 owners. Whether this will remain so after release is still open.
According to its own statement, Sony has been working on the service for more than five years. The project was previously named Cronos. There are big expansion plans for the future. A total of 28 data centers will be built in 15 cities in order to provide service to users permanently. Speculation about whether Sony’s handheld project is designed for cloud gaming is palpable. The release of the new console is scheduled for 2023.
