Climate protection: “Technology helps, but it must be sacrificed”

Recurring chair Norbert Haslacher talks about potential savings in aviation, military communications and drone traffic.

the press: According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it is very difficult to implement the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources in aviation. Therefore, efficiency must be increased above all else. You keep asking for it, too. Where are there still shortcomings in air travel?

Norbert Haslacher: There is some potential on the ground and in the air. Globally, air traffic accounts for only about 2.5 percent of total carbon dioxide emissions, but there is still room for improvement here. For example, with new systems that improve the movement of taxis at the airport and prevent errors. It’s hard to believe how often planes hit the nose. Or the plane defaults to the exit and then has to take a long turn to reach the right gate. At Frankfurt Airport, these systems alone have saved $30 million in fuel costs annually on the A320 fleet.

In aviation, in particular, one pays a lot of attention to costs. Why were these shortcomings not fixed long ago?
