The trio of Tonali and pianist Daniel Linton-France takes a refreshing look at chamber music in the wake of Anton Bruckner.
No hero worship, just look at the surroundings. TONALi Trio has chosen this approach for its contribution to the Bruckner Year 2024: a double CD with piano trios and solo piano works for music pupils of the jubilee. There are Mathilde Kralik von Merswalden from Linz, Paul Caro from Breslau, the bohemian Franz Marchner (not to be confused with the romantic Heinrich) and the two Viennese Cyril Hennis and Alfred Strauss. A refreshing addition to the repertoire. However, Kralik von Merswalden's brilliant piece could have been bolder and more urgent. Caro is clearly closer to the Tonali Trio, where the warmth, melancholy and melodic bliss are sensitively worked out, and the outlines are transparent. Marschner develops drama and intimacy, but the tension drops at times. Pianist Daniel Linton-France fine-tunes the emotions in the works of Hennis and Strauss.
