CDPR is no longer developing its own multiplayer technology

from Valentine Sattler
During an investor conference, CD Projekt confirmed that using Unreal Engine 5 will stop developing its multiplayer technologies. Cyberpunk 2077’s true multiplayer mode should be off the table.

Nearly four weeks ago, Polish company CD Projekt surprisingly announced that another Witcher game was in the works. For the first time, this should use Unreal Engine 5 instead of the previously used and self-developed Redengine. This allows CD Projekt to use the functionality provided by Unreal Engine 5 for future projects. On the contrary, this means that the previous self-developed units of the company lose their relevance.

Multiplayer thanks to Unreal Engine

The loss of relevance also affects, for example, the multiplayer technologies developed by CD Projekt, which were actually intended for Cyberpunk 2077. The company moved away from true multiplayer mode last year and instead talked about smaller multiplayer elements that should be incorporated into Cyberpunk and The Witcher.

CD Projekt’s chief financial officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, has now confirmed that development of its multiplayer technologies will be halted. Accordingly, in the future the company will instead rely on the corresponding Unreal Engine 5 tools, which apparently cover the requirements of CD Projekt.

“Over the past few years, we have been developing our multiplayer technology. With the recent decision to start a strategic collaboration with Epic Games and use the Unreal Engine 5, which offers advanced multiplayer solutions, we have further development of our proprietary multiplayer technology and related Write-off of approximately $4.90 million.”

Multiplayer mode suitable for The Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077 So it should be off the table, as both games are still Redengine-based and that certainly won’t be complemented by the multiplayer capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. However, for the next branch series, it would be conceivable that CD Projekt would have fewer problems and be able to offer more. of jobs using the new engine. After all, the company can focus mainly on developing games and not have to make major changes to its engine at the same time.
