Blackmagic Design Case Study: Live Theater “Bygone Theatre” – PRONEWS: Digital Video Production Web Magazine

Blackmagic Design has announced that Bygone Theater in Toronto, Ontario, is using Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro and Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K to deliver an interactive digital theater experience for The Yellow Wallpaper. Plus an ATEM SDI Extreme ISO Live Production Converter. Blackmagic Design products have been used not only to broadcast live productions to home viewers, but also for a face-to-face show based show at the Campbell House Museum in Toronto.

Founded in 2012, Bygone Theater is committed to developing Toronto’s independent theater through a variety of creative, educational and advocacy initiatives. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “Yellow Wallpaper” production takes it one step further by incorporating Blackmagic Design technology to offer viewers an immersive experience.

In “Yellow Wallpaper,” the protagonist, who is described as a “certain woman,” is quarantined by her doctor husband. The story of the film revolves around a woman who gradually loses her sanity and ego and descends into madness due to her obsession with the diseased yellow wallpaper in her bedroom and being held captive by her.

The Bygone Theater captivates audiences with artistic projections in live performances. Audiences were able to tour the different rooms and elaborate sets, touch curtains, dining room cutlery, and more, adding to the overall story and experience. You can also watch the same stage live on Zoom.

Producer/Director Emily Dicks and Producer Connor Fitzgerald used four Blackmagic Studio cameras to capture an intricate performance of “Yellow Backgrounds”. All three cameras are attached to ATEM SDI Extreme ISO. A fourth camera was connected to the computer using a DeckLink Duo 2 capture and playback card for projection mapping of interactive elements such as moving background.

Each camera’s feed was used for a live broadcast to those watching via Zoom at home, and was also sent directly to projectors located throughout the Campbell House Museum.

Projection designer Bria Cole commented that the camera’s large LCD screen and lightweight body were particularly helpful in its setup.

Mr. Cole:Our production team had limited access to the pre-program art stage, but Blackmagic Design’s cameras and large screens allowed us to visualize and visualize projections in every room.

A lightweight platform was also used to securely suspend one camera, creating one of the production’s signature shots. This is a video of a “certain woman” lying in bed. This was dropped onto the dining room table.

Mr. Fitzgerald:This story required multiple camera angles to capture different perspectives of the stage. At the same time, they needed a camera that was both easy to use and versatile. The Blackmagic Design camera was a game-changer. The touch screen, built-in color corrector, and incredible low-light performance allowed us to take our two-person team’s production to the next level.

Bygone Theater used the ATEM SDI Extreme ISO system as a production hub, adjusting audio levels with the built-in Fairlight audio mixer during stage and live broadcasts. The Campbell House Museum has had some audio challenges due to its age, but Fitzgerald said the adapter’s audio performance and the ability to connect auxiliary microphones to the Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Plus helped it achieve the sound he wanted.

Mr. Cole:‘Yellow Wallpaper’ was a huge success and Blackmagic Design products were integral to making it happen. With 4K cameras and versatility, Blackmagic Design products are great tools for creating unexpected and compelling works. We can’t wait to see how other products use this technology to deliver immersive experiences to their audiences.
