Amazon founder Jeff Bezos criticized President Biden for a tweet the president wrote suggesting that taxing the wealthiest companies could help bring down inflation, calling bringing the two together as “misleading guidance.”
Want to reduce inflation? Let’s make sure the richest companies pay their fair share,” Biden said chirp On Friday evening.
“The newly created Disinformation Council should review this tweet, or perhaps they need to form a new non-sequential board instead. Raising corporate taxes is good for discussion. Taming inflation is critical to discussion. Bringing them together is just a misguidance,” Bezos on shootingTweet Biden’s statement on the platform.
Since the Department of Homeland Security’s Board of Disinformation was announced last month, the new board has angered a number of Republicans who have dubbed it the “Truth Department” and claimed it would monitor free speech.
Bezos’ comments come as US inflation has reached its highest level in 40 years amid labor shortages and supply chain issues, the latest of which have plagued the infant formula industry.
Amazon has repeatedly been criticized by Democrats for not paying more taxes. And Biden had previously criticized the company in March of last year, say She and the other companies had paid zero income taxes.
CNBC mentioned Amazon paid $162 million in federal taxes in 2019 but has not previously owed taxes to the federal government since 2016.
Amazon bill jumps to $1.8 billion in federal taxes in 2020, according to A Report By the Wall Street Journal, a number likely to grow higher under Biden’s plan to set a minimum corporate tax rate.
