Shortly before the important European Union decision that could pave the way for the end of combustion engines, the Electronic Fuel Alliance spoke. The interest group advocated not only a commitment to one technology.

In the debate over a possible end to combustion engines in the European Union, the interest group E-Fuel Alliance has warned against a unilateral commitment to battery engines. The transportation sector is responsible for 25 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions and four-fifths of them are on the road. If you realize that, you can’t stick to one technique and certainly not legally mandated, said Monica Grivan, CEO.

Electric motion plays an important role in the sustainability of transportation, but there are also many application areas in which a battery drive is not feasible or economical. Synthetic fuels could play their part in climate protection here, for example in aviation and shipping.

At the same time, the former Minister of the Environment for Lower Saxony pointed out the costs to consumers that a unilateral focus on electric mobility would entail: “In any case, I think it makes sense not to just scrap combustion cars, because production from electric cars requires raw materials and energy , but to run on climate-neutral fuel.”

Here the legislature must become active at the EU and federal level in order to set the appropriate regulations for all service providers: “We need equal treatment. Synthetic fuels use renewable energy and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This is fundamentally different from operating a vehicle with generated energy. of coal-fired energy,” Grivan emphasized.
