The Super Bowl dominated the domestic box office this weekend, with revenues falling to historic lows due to the weekend-long frenzy over Sunday's showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas, and an ongoing winter slowdown At the addresses of major Hollywood studios.
Combined ticket sales reached an estimated $40 million, the worst Super Bowl weekend showing in more than three decades outside of 2021, when many theaters were still closed due to the coronavirus crisis, according to Comscore. Revenue in 2021 was $7.7 million.
The last time revenues declined several times was in the mid-to-late 1980s, according to Comscore.
There's a silver lining: Hollywood studios aren't too obsessed with weekend grosses. Instead, many are gearing up to showcase flashy — and expensive — new locations for their films.
Back to the box office. This year, Matthew Vaughn's big budget bust, Argyle, held first place over Super Bowl weekend with a modest $6.5 million, also one of the lowest grossers for the frame after falling 63 percent since its opening last weekend. The film has a domestic gross of $28.1 million, according to Apple Original Films and distribution partner Universal.
Horror comedy Focus Features Lisa Frankenstein It opened in second place with $3.8 million. Focus chose to launch the niche picture nationwide, versus a platform release, in the hopes that it would serve as counter-programming for females not engaged in Super Bowl mania. However, there's a new development this year: Taylor Swift is responsible for increasing football viewership among girls and women (her boyfriend is Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and she's expected to attend Sunday's game).
“This year unfortunately marks a low ebb for the football-focused weekend, and with only one new wide-ranging film hitting theaters and a lack of momentum in the market, the industry will now have to look towards the post-match era to get back on track,” says Kabir. Comscore box office analysts Paul Dergarabedian.
Lisa Frankenstein, a twist on the classic horror story that sees a young woman collect a corpse and bring it back to life, received a B Cinemascore. More than 70% of ticket buyers, many of whom were female, were under the age of 35.

Historically, there's money to be made at the box office though in the Super Bowl if a studio wants to take a risk on it. In 2022 and 2023, Super Bowl weekend revenue will reach approximately $54 million, led by Death on the Nile And Magic Mike's last dance (Again, counter-programming).
