Apple plans to simplify the iPhone battery replacement process | Mac Live

The move comes in response to a new European Union law that requires smartphone makers to ensure batteries can be replaced by those who own them using accessible gadgets by 2025. According to sources close to the iPhone production process, Apple is exploring the use of electrically induced adhesive release technology to achieve that.

Replacing the current iPhone battery is difficult and requires removing the adhesive strips with tweezers. If these strips break during the process, additional steps must be taken using heat or solvents to break down the adhesive. After removing the old battery, a special chamber and machine are required to securely install the new battery.

In contrast, Apple is testing a new technology that encases the battery in metal instead of black foil. Previous images of the alleged iPhone 16 Pro battery with a metal casing leaked earlier this year. By applying a low voltage, the new battery can be quickly removed from the chassis. Despite this progress, consumers still have to open the iPhone themselves, which remains complicated by the adhesives and screws that hold the display in place and maintain water resistance.

This new method of replacing the battery is expected to debut on at least one iPhone 16 model later this year, and could be expanded to all iPhone 17 models next year. Apple will continue to recommend that users seek professional help to replace the battery as the process is complex and potentially risky.

Apple could be exempt from EU legislation requiring battery replacement for ease of use if devices meet certain criteria, such as retaining 83 percent of their capacity after 500 full charge cycles and 80 percent after 1,000 charge cycles. The iPhone 15 meets the criteria for 1,000 charge cycles, but older models do not meet the requirement for 500 charge cycles.

While Apple is known for offering devices that are difficult to repair due to their sealed design, which improves water resistance and durability, the company has taken steps in recent years to address these concerns by offering self-repair options and diagnostic tools.
