Apex Legends: Are you a developer and have questions about Storm Point changes? Question and answer summary | EAA!!FPSjp.net

Respawn Entertainment has made changes to the “Storm Point” map in “Apex Legends”. In regards to this change, an AMA (Ask any questions?) was held by the development team on Reddit.

In this article, we’ll translate the questions we’ve received about Storm Point’s behind-the-scenes stories and balance in casual/ranked/competitive scenes, as well as the development team’s answers.

A Q&A about the Storm Point change was held with development staff

The Respawn development team holds irregular AMA sessions on Reddit, and this time the following four people participated in exchanging questions with the community (titles removed).

  • Michael: High level designer
  • Heather: writer
  • Mr. Dr: Global Director
  • Theme: Community Manager

When do you plan to change the map?

– How long have you been planning to change the map? How do you manage this kind of planning in a live service game with all the casual/ranked/competitive players, each with different map characteristics they prefer? Also, how is Nessie’s location chosen and are there any plans for more similar Easter eggs?

Mr. Michael:Planning and prototyping for the Storm Point update began about a year and a half ago. It’s important to set clear goals and give yourself time to explore as many ideas as possible. This will give you the confidence to move forward with the right ideas.

This update was a huge challenge. Competitive players loved Stormpoint, but the map elements that made the competitive experience great made combat difficult to find in the casual scene. That’s why we set out to make changes that offer all players new, engaging combat spaces while simultaneously addressing improvements to competitive play.

Nessie was located by our talented designer Casey O’Brien who also implemented the Easter egg!

Make it more compact without changing the map size

– The new Stormpoint looks more compact while still being the same map. How did you manage to make it smaller?

Mr. Michael:The size of Storm Points and the distances between POIs are part of what makes them great competitive maps. Therefore, we had to carefully choose the areas to be deleted. We targeted areas that didn’t feel like basic courses (such as the South Island near the Barometer) and elements that would make the courses much longer (such as the large area between the Lightning Rod and Thunderwatch).

The reason for the IMC armory being erased

– Why did you delete IMC Armory? The Storm Points are so large that you feel like you can quickly get equipment in the armory and then move on to battle.

Mr. Michael:One of the most common comments for Stormpoint was that players were having trouble finding combat. I felt like IMC Armory was making it worse. This is because many teams were moving towards fighting Specter rather than rotating organically on the map.

We’ve also found it very interesting for teams outside the armory to find creative ways to disrupt and block players, and while it was fun for a while, we don’t think it’s beneficial to the long-term health of the map. .

The Specter is gone, but the armory remains, at the cost of sustaining minor storm damage. It has high-level equipment and can provide a great defensive position in case of emergency!

Isn’t there a little trident?

-There is only a trident in the southeast region, but I feel that there should be a trident in other important points as well.

Mr. Michael:Thank you for your feedback! Approves. We plan to add another trident to the barometer in a medium patch.

Are you aware of 3D POIs?

-The new POI appears to be more vertically aware than the previous POI. Was this an intentional change?

Mr. Michael:We’ve paid attention to the important points in each map that players would really want to fight. Interconnected vertical spaces such as World’s Edge’s tall buildings with ziplines were very popular among players looking for high kill counts.

These spaces provide plenty of room for skill expression as players use creative movements to freely engage and evade combat with enemies.

We wanted to bring this type of level design to Stormpoint, which led to Wattson’s Pylon, ZEUS Station, and CETO Station.

Isn’t taking Watson City easy?

– Why didn’t Wattson’s Town Takeover at Storm Point have any special gameplay-changing items like other Town Takeovers? For example, Crypto’s Town Takeover had a map clear, Wraith had a large portal, and Caustic had a poison room.

Mr. Michael:When adding new dynamic elements, we care more about bringing real value to the Apex Legends sandbox than pure novelty.

For example, while we like Lifeline clinics, the central treatment platform wasn’t used as much as we had hoped, and overall wasn’t adding much value to Olympus. For Watson’s Pylon, we knew it had to be a fun and engaging point of interest for players looking to fight at Storm Point, so we set out to create a point of interest with strong level design.

However, charging towers and fun Easter eggs were included because we knew you were expected to interact with mythology-themed POIs. Overall, I’m very happy with the way the Watson portal turned out!

Has the map changed for Nessie?

– Was the destruction and rebuilding of Storm Point a plan to include Nessie’s victory screen?

Mr. Ed:Yes (lol). In fact, this Easter egg was created by a different team than the map team, and it was a lot of fun to observe!

Did you have a competitive landscape in mind?

– Was Stormpoint created with competition in mind? It feels like the most balanced map. Is this an intentional design?

Mr. Ed:Original designer Rodney Reece always thought this would be a competitive map, and it was his favorite in ALGS.

Balancing casual, tidy, and competitive

– In the Season 19 patch notes, I mentioned that the goal of the Storm Point changes is to find a good compromise between casual and ranked. Do you feel that this goal has been achieved? Are there any plans to do this in future maps (Olympus, Broken Moon, etc.)?

Mr. Ed:We learned a lot from Stormpoint and understood how to handle map updates. Based on current metrics, the changes appear to have been received fairly well in both casual and ranked mode. We hope to build on this momentum and apply the same principles to future map updates.

This includes deep analysis, gathering more feedback, and taking a thoughtful approach to change. Map updates should have an impact. Not all updates will be as large as Stormpoint, but they should address core issues with the map.

Most importantly, impactful changes take time, and we want to take time to develop future updates to ensure they truly resonate with the community. As the number of maps increases, we are taking a more focused and systematic approach rather than trying to update all the maps quickly.

Changes in the sky that can be felt from anywhere

– What is the decision regarding big changes in the sky? The sky has changed so much that there are a lot of dark and shaded areas.

Mr. Ed:We wanted to give players the feeling that storm spots were changing from every direction on the map. To immediately emphasize this big change, we changed the sky.

We also wanted to take the opportunity to make the maps different from each other. Compared to other maps, we have moved to an earlier time period, resulting in darker shadows in some locations.

We are improving our lighting model to find ways to improve the right balance between atmosphere and gameplay visibility.

Storm Point was badly damaged

– How does a storm work? When Storm Point was first released, it was said that the storm was always active, but is it always moving around the surface or does it sometimes converge?

Mr. Ed:Storms can always be predicted in this area. However, Storm Point was a rare surprise event, and one of the largest ever seen.

Now that the storm has subsided, we are experiencing relative calm, but we will continue to rebuild as the region returns to its familiar rhythms.

This unexpected increase caused severe damage to energy infrastructure. The islands here provided power for the city, and Stormpoint Island in particular provided power for Sutamo. However, the island remained offline for a long time and was not prepared to deal with the sudden power crisis.

What are the weather system plans?

-Are there any plans to incorporate other weather or climate features into Storm Point?

Mr. Ed:In the past, we took into account weather factors such as heavy fog and snowfall. However, the main challenge was ensuring that it worked stably across all consoles and PCs and provided a consistent experience for players. Adding environmental details such as falling leaves, snow, and rain, while increasing the believability of the world, can have a negative impact on gameplay.

Weather is a more sensitive element, as time changes may throw players off.

Unexpected bug

-Was it a deliberate change that made it impossible to place an escape tower above the command center?

Mr. Michael:It was a side effect of fixing bugs. Hopefully it will be resolved in the medium patch.

Wildlife at Storm Point

-I don’t remember seeing trolls since the update… they used to be a nuisance because they attacked/attacked me a lot, but they were complementary to the map. Is it possible to see something wandering around the map from time to time?

Mr. Ed:Creatures are a feature of this map, and although you can still find trolls, they are concentrated around nests to create predictable combat. So there is no random wandering.

-Are there any plans to add more wildlife to Stormpoint? I’ve heard something called a “Goliath”, but is there a chance it could be a boss-type land animal?

Mr. Ed:There are currently no plans to expand Stormpoint’s wildlife. But never say never. We will consider which encounters are suitable for the map.

What about Easter eggs?

-Are there any secret Easter eggs in Storm Point?

Mr. Thime:Even if that were the case, if it were published, it would not be a secret. 😉

Mr. Ed:Most of the Easter eggs are found centered around Watson’s Gate, but there are still a few little secrets that will be revealed soon.

Three permanent security strikes

– Can we make three strikes permanent?

Mr. Thime:I can’t say anything about permanent installation, but Three Strikes will be back!

Significant caustic lines

– Stormpoint has a line dedicated to Caustic where he says Storm bulldozed the last evidence of Alexander Knox, but what exactly does that refer to? He’s originally from Gaia, but perhaps he has a closer connection to Storm Point?

Heather:I wrote this line! Although he has no specific connection to Stormpoint itself, Gaia and its power grid are affected by Stormpoint’s Stormcatcher. They didn’t have time to check on Gaia yet, so he hoped that if any evidence remained of his origins it had been destroyed. (Crypto and Rampant, also from Gaia, have similar fonts.)

Watson and Reith

— Among the new additions, a photo of Wattson and Wraith in Wattson’s room, and a framed photo of them in Wraith’s Spa Leger next to a photo of her and her father, a sign that Respawn has confirmed their relationship. Didn’t he forget?

Heather:We won’t forget anything! Their friendship is as strong as ever, but we have so many main characters that we have to constantly change focus.

Famous souvenir?

-Where did Watson get Nessie? Is it sold in Apex games?

Mr. Ed:Edge of the World Museum Gift Shop.

Regarding lifting the ban on cross-advancement

-Is there any clear information about mutual progress? I’ve been waiting since the update, but it’s still not available.

Mr. Thime:Cross-advancement is done in stages to ensure stability. If you have X (old Twitter), the update information isRepost accountWe will notify you from time to time.

-Is there a better way to communicate than this terrible platform?

Thieamy: We share broader updates on our Trello boards, but we still use X for immediate status. I cannot guarantee that this will not change in the future, but I will certainly share this opinion.
