Without fear of making contact with the beautiful voice, Oboeist Albrecht Meyer and Berlin Baroque soloists explore the world of the Bach family.
Choirs and vocal ensembles have long explored the theme of the Bach family, that is, the inclusion of Johann Sebastian Bach in the works of his predecessors and descendants. But it’s also an excellent motto in instrumental music. Albrecht Meyer and the Berlin Baroque Soloists based their latest recording, The Bach Generations, on this. On first hearing, the tonal opulence is astonishing, and it’s not afraid to connect to the beautiful voice that displeases proponents of the historically informed practice of performance. The mostly mild tempo, which allows Meyer to savor the sound of his oboes with relish, is rarely heard in early music. Anyone who hasn’t completely abandoned the previously familiar romantic interpretation will be happier with this CD than an apologist for reading who wants to throw it all against the grain. Sturm und Drang’s nod to Bach’s sons Johann Christoph Friedrich and Carl Philipp Emanuel, who had already left behind Baroque language, is quite convincing.
