Nine movies have been uploaded for awards including Super Mario Bros. and BlackBerry

The Academy Screening Room is now open to all eligible AMPAS members, with the first wave of films uploaded for Academy Award consideration for the upcoming awards season.

Nine notable titles among the films, including Ben Affleck’s “Air” from Amazon Studios, Michael B Jordan’s “Creed III” from MGM, Kelly Fremon Craig’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” and “John Wick: Chapter 4” To Chad Stahelski, both from Lionsgate.

The Academy conducts an extensive vetting process for each film it chooses to submit for consideration. In 2022, nine films were among the first to be added to the member portal, while in 2020, eight films were released that season. Historically, there are more than 300 films in the works to have Best Picture in mind. Obviously, more films will be added in larger batches over the next several months. Distributors are the final decision makers as to when a film will be shown in the Academy screening room for viewing.

Featuring a star-studded cast, “Air” tells the story of sports marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro and the quest to sign rookie basketball player Michael Jordan to Nike in the 1980s. With a global box office of $90 million since its debut in April, the film has been a hit with a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes. With its pedigree, it will be one of the biggest streaming installments of the fall awards season alongside other potential counterparts like Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” and Maggie Betts’ “The Burial.” Along with Best Picture, you’ll be vying for attention for Best Actor for Matt Damon (his best role since The Talented Mr. Ripley), Supporting Actress Viola Davis (newly appearing in The Woman King), and Supporting Actor. to Chris Messina and potential double nominations for Affleck in directing (a decade after his “Argo” won Best Picture) and also in Supporting Actor.

No one is going to pretend that the fourth installment of the “John Wick” franchise will suddenly enter the Oscars conversation when its predecessors failed to do so. However, after $427 million, the 26-year-old studio is wondering why not? George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) was also the fourth film in a series that was never on the Oscar radar, managing 10 nominations, and taking home six times.
