In the legal dispute between Sonos and Google, the court ruled in favor of Sonos. Google fined $32.5 million for patent infringement

Sonos and Google have been at odds in court for a while, but that feud appears to be over, at Google’s expense.

Google is now paying $32.5 million in damages in a patent dispute with US speaker maker Sonos, a grand jury has ruled in the Northern California District Court in San Francisco. The jury found that Google infringed Sonos’ patent for its smart speakers and media player software.

Lawsuits and counterclaims between the two tech companies began in early 2020 when Sonos accused Google of copying their patented audio technology. It’s about the simultaneous use of multiple speakers in different rooms, which isn’t necessarily a unique selling point, but it’s one of the core capabilities of Sonos speakers.

Sonos has already won its first case before the US Department of Commerce in early 2022, which found that Google infringed five Sonos patents.

Despite the recent ruling, the legal dispute between the two former partners still exists. Sonos claims that more than 200 of its intellectual property rights have been violated by Google, while Google denies the allegations and maintains that it developed its technologies independently.

However, Google has also filed counterclaims, accusing Sonos of infringing its patents. Another lawsuit, which began in early May, addresses Google’s allegations that Sonos violated intellectual property rights related to Google’s smart speakers and voice control technology.
