To date, about 30 engineers have received further training. Marco Tornaroli explains what modules are available and why this additional training is so important. He is the Vice President of the Swiss Engineering Expert Chamber STV.
Swiss engineering: Why did you decide to become an expert?
Marco Tornaroli: Because challenges as an expert also help you in your daily work. Expert work is a diverse and research-intensive work in which you can constantly learn something new.
Swiss engineering: How is the continuing education program organized?
Marco Tornaroli: There are well-established courses from expert business basics to certified experts. This is entitled “Certified Expert Swiss Engineering STV”. First, they go through a rigorous admissions process and introductory course. The training consists of three modules.
Swiss engineering: What is the training content?
Marco Tornaroli: In the first module, basic knowledge of preparing expert opinions and legal aspects is imparted. The foundations for special, court, and insurance reporting are laid. Arbitration and mediation opinions and some other issues arising in the work of experts are also dealt with.
Swiss engineering: What is the content of the second and third units?
Marco Tornaroli: In the second module, the basic requirements for commissioning court experience, the processes and procedures in the courts and the rules of the game are passed. The most complex expert opinions are usually found in court. It is therefore important to know the basic legal foundations.
The requirement to obtain a written expert opinion in court often cannot be compared to a report under private law. Potential obstacles during the hearing are first consolidated in theory with practical examples and role-plays in the form of a workshop. In the third module, the focus is on practical experience and complementing court experience.
Completion of modules is an examination consisting of a written examination report and a written and oral examination. Certification is the basis for certification according to the ISO EN17024 standard.
Swiss engineering: Is the certificate recognized in Switzerland?
Marco Tornaroli: The Expert Chamber has very strict admission criteria and exam requirements. This enables graduates of the three modules to undertake the work of an established expert at the highest level. The Swiss Engineering Expert Chamber, with 110 experts, is one of the largest associations of experts in the field of engineering.
Swiss engineering: Who would you recommend more training to become an expert?
Marco Tornaroli: If you have a great deal of interest, curiosity, and creativity, you have the best qualifications to become an expert. In addition, you must be prepared to continue your professional development: whether it is through brochures, seminars, training courses or conferences.
