The 19-year-old Walmart employee found dead in the store's oven was discovered in Canada by her mother, who also worked there, according to the family's community fundraiser.
The teenager has been identified as Gursimran Kaur, according to A.K Fundraising Organized by the Maritime Sikh Association in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on behalf of the family.
“On October 19, the fateful Saturday night, she was found burned to death in the oven at a Walmart bakery,” the fundraiser said.
Halifax Regional Police They said they were called to the Walmart at 6990 Mumford Road. At 9:30 p.m., the young woman’s body was found in “a large oven compartment belonging to the bakery section of the store.”
Kaur and her mother worked at Walmart for two years, according to the fundraiser.
That evening, Kaur's mother tried to find her after not seeing her for one hour. I asked around and tried to contact her to no avail.
“The mother started to panic because it was so unusual [Kaur] “To turn off her phone during the day,” the fundraiser said. “Imagine the horror her mother experienced when she opened the oven herself.”
The authorities said on Tuesday that the cause and manner of death have not yet been confirmed, and the investigation is still ongoing.
The Maritime Sikh Association said Kaur and her mother were originally from India. Her father and brother are in India and the organization is trying to transfer them to Canada.
So far, the fundraiser has raised more than $75,000 Canadian dollars for the family.
Walmart told NBC News on Wednesday that the store is closed until further notice. The Nova Scotia Ministry of Labour, Skills and Immigration also said it issued a stop-work order Tuesday for the bakery and a piece of equipment at the store.
“We are deeply saddened and our deepest thoughts are with our partner and his family,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. “Our focus remains on taking care of our partners and making sure they get the support they need.”
