Houston – The Mars rover “diligently” failed in its first attempt to collect rock samples from the red planet. The US space agency NASA on Friday released images of a small landscape with a hole in the middle – the first hole to be drilled by a robot on Mars. However, the data submitted by Rover indicate that the rock was not collected from the drilling.
NASA Representative Thomas Surbuchen announced that this was not the expected result. But the NASA team in charge will now work on a “solution” to collect the samples.
It is expected that it will take eleven days to collect the rocks. Its purpose is to search for signs of ancient microbial life preserved in ancient lake debris. Scientists hope to better understand the geological conditions on Mars.
Scientists suspect a former lake in the Jessero Valley
“Perseverance” left the US state of Florida a year ago and landed in the Jessero abyss on Mars in February. Scientists suspect there was a deep lake about 3.5 billion years ago that filled up several times over time and provided conditions suitable for organic life.
However, it will take scientists several years to analyze the models: NASA does not plan a joint venture with the European Space Agency (ESA) to bring the models back to Earth until the 2030s.
