Sony has introduced a new upscaling technology called “PSSR” for the PS5 Pro. This is how the new technology should compare with FSR and DLSS.

  • PS5 Pro features new upscaling technology.
  • PSSR is said to offer improved image quality compared to FSR 3.1.
  • When it comes to anti-aliasing, DLSS 3.7 is said to offer better performance than PSSR.

Sony has announced three major innovations for the PS5 Pro that will make the upcoming console much more powerful than the PS5. This includes, among other things, the new PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Supersolution) upscaling technology.

Using this technology, a low-resolution image is taken as a basis and scaled up using artificial intelligence. A lower resolution means that more images can be displayed per second (“FPS”).

Digital Foundry has already demonstrated this technology in action in a new YouTube video. Compared to the popular upscaling technologies FSR 3.1 and DLSS 3.7 in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

From 4:50 onwards in the video, it becomes clear that PSSR seems to offer improved image quality compared to FSR, which is especially evident in still images. From minute 7:50 you can also see that PSSR allows for a more realistic representation of particles and grass.

In direct comparison with Nvidia's upscaling technology, there should still be weaknesses. From minute 10:35, you can see, for example, that DLSS produces less flickering light on the edges and corners. DLSS also seems to perform better when it comes to smoothing edges and image clarity, as can be seen from minute 12:10.
