Los Angeles (KABC) — Family members of Eric and Lyle Menendez, brothers serving life sentences for killing their parents in Beverly Hills more than 35 years ago, are scheduled to speak as prosecutors review new evidence in the case.

Nearly two dozen of his relatives are scheduled to host a news conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday to pressure the district attorney to formally recommend a re-sentencing in the brothers' case.

Defense attorney for the brothers Mark Geragos and their family told ABC News that their greatest wish is to be released from prison and return home in time to celebrate their aunt's 93rd birthday this Thanksgiving.

Earlier this month, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that his office would review the new evidence and make a decision on whether a re-sentencing is warranted in the notorious case that has captured national attention.

New evidence presented in the petition includes a letter written by Eric Menendez that his attorneys say supports allegations that he was sexually abused by his father.

The brothers said they killed their parents in self-defense after enduring a lifetime of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Their lawyers say that because society's views on sexual assault have changed, the brothers may not have been convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole today.

The brothers' lawyers said the family believed from the beginning that they should have been charged with manslaughter, not murder. Geragos said manslaughter was not an option for the jury during the second trial that ultimately led to the brothers being convicted of murder.

Lyle Menendez, then 21, and Eric Menendez, then 18, admitted they shot their father, entertainment executive Jose Menendez, and their mother, Kitty Menendez, in 1989, but said they feared their parents were dead. Prosecutors asserted at the time that there was no evidence of any harassment. They said the children were after their parents' multi-million dollar estate.

Jurors rejected the death sentence in favor of life imprisonment without parole.

The case gained new attention after Netflix began streaming the true crime drama “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”

Gascón said he believes the issue of sexual assault could have been handled more sensitively if the case had occurred today.

“We have not yet decided the outcome. We are reviewing the information,” Gascón said earlier this month.

He said that his office did not know the “correctness” of what was presented during the trial.

Gascón, who is seeking re-election, noted that more than 300 people have been re-sentenced during his term, and only four of them have committed a crime again.

A hearing was scheduled for November 29.

Lyle Menendez recently earned a degree in sociology from UC Irvine through the prison program. Geragos said they were model prisoners even though they believed they would never be released.

“I think it's time,” Geragos said. “The family thinks it's time.”

Reality TV star and celebrity Kim Kardashian, who has called for criminal justice reform, also shared in a personal essay shared with NBC News that the massive media attention in the first nationally televised trial deprived them of justice.

She noted that through their “sufferings and stories of abuse parodied in skits on Saturday Night Live,” they were portrayed as “two arrogant rich kids from Beverly Hills who killed their parents out of greed. There was no room for empathy, let alone empathy.”

“Eric and Lyle had no chance of getting a fair trial against this backdrop,” Kardashian wrote.
