Met Gala 2025 theme sparks 'personalization' backlash.

Armchair fashion critics were quick to offer their feedback in the comments section – and elsewhere on the social media platform – in the wake of the unexpected announcement.

“Sounds like a recipe for takeover disaster… Designers, study!” One amateur sighed.

“Am I the only one nervous about this?” Another subscriber. “Good topic but let's hope it's not culturally appropriate.”

Vogue reported that an exhibition accompanying the event will include clothing, paintings, photographs and videos — all exploring black men's style.

Despite clear efforts to highlight black fashion, many have expressed concerns that well-intentioned efforts could easily go awry — with the biggest names in American popular culture potentially misinterpreting the concept.

“Kudos… let's pray no one shows up in blackface,” commented one concerned fan.

Another asked: “We have so much time to do this topic right, I wonder how other races would handle this topic without being culturally appropriative or disrespectful/stereotyping.”

“It saddens me that there will be so few African American fashion houses able to showcase their artwork,” said another person.

However, many said they couldn't wait to see their favorite fashion boards serving up high fashion looks.

“Zendaya in us is eating this topic,” one joked, describing the “sexy” topic as “we deserve to see it.”

“This is awesome. This is a classic. This is history,” said another.

“Black style throughout history has had an immeasurable impact on global fashion identity and commercialism. This Met Gala is greatly overdue,” another applauded.

Next year will see the first exclusive look at duds since 2003's Men in Skirts.

The Met Gala will return to Manhattan on May 5, 2025, and the dress code will be announced in early 2025.

Museumgoers will have the opportunity to view the Superfine exhibit from May 6 through October 26, 2025.
