The Sims fans must be strong again. As we've reported in recent months, there will be no The Sims 5 in the classic sense. Instead, the current branch will be completely restructured under the working title “Project René”. This includes, among other things, the “Sims Creator Program,” through which user-created content is offered for sale. This is of course practical, as creators cannot claim developer salary. But it gets worse.
The Sims is completely re-monetised
There has always been a number of DLC released for The Sims, but EA is no longer satisfied with that. New photos of a supposed test build for “Project Rene” are circulating online. This shows a user interface quite overloaded with a number of icons reminiscent of mobile games. You might expect XP, money, emojis, and to-do list in any mobile game with cheat mechanics. Above all, a comparison with a previously published prototype screenshot clearly shows the change of course at Maxis.

It's one thing that there won't be a sequel and that the developers want to keep releasing updates for Sims 4 instead. The fact that these changes turn the title into a type of mobile game has not been well received by the community at all. The comments on social media are identical. The fact that support for The Sims Mobile ended this year makes it plausible that “Project Rene” could replace that title as well. Of course, this is a slap in the face to hardcore fans of the PC version.
