Construction work on the new school swimming pool and clubhouse in the Arnsberg district on Auf der Alm has begun with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony.

Arnsberg – Together with the political members of the council and committees, the shareholders' meeting of “Nass”, the city sports association, Mayor Ralf Paul Bittner and Bernd Löhr as project managers of Neues Freizeitbad Arnsberg GmbH, the starting signal for the future-oriented project was given.

Water area 250 square meters

In the building with an area of more than 1,000 square metres, schools and clubs will in future have access to a 10 x 25 metre swimming pool, i.e. a water area of 250 square metres. You can then swim in four lanes equipped with splash pads. Thanks to the height-adjustable lifting floor, flexible water depths of up to 1.80 metres can be set in part of the pool. Two changing areas and two sanitary areas are planned for users, as well as rooms suitable for people with disabilities. External access will be barrier-free. The pool lift system allows people with reduced mobility to enter the pool safely.

“I am very grateful that in Arnsberg we continue to work together politically on this issue and secure the water infrastructure for our children and clubs for decades to come. The decisions supported by the shareholders’ meeting and unanimously approved by the council help families, schools and clubs. While swimming pools are closed in other cities, this approach has enabled us to build two new educational pools in the shortest possible time – the last one in Houston, now in Arnsberg and in the foreseeable future in the eastern part of the city in Hertreben,” says Mayor Ralph Paul with delight.

Investment of around 8.5 million euros

The Neues Freizeitbad Arnsberg GmbH, a subsidiary of the city of Arnsberg, is investing around 8.5 million euros to build a replacement for the old school complex on Sauerstrasse. The new school and club pool will create a water area that will continue to ensure that swimming is taught in Arnsberg and that swimming is encouraged in clubs. The pool will therefore not be open to the public, but will only be available to local schools and clubs.

First indoor swimming pool with new technology

The new building impresses with numerous technical innovations. One of these is climate-friendly energy supply technology: This is achieved by installing a heat pump with hybrid PVT collectors. “The new Arnsberg School and Club swimming pool will be the first indoor swimming pool with this technology in Germany. These photovoltaic modules aim to achieve an additional production of around seven percent compared to conventional photovoltaic modules. The environment is also protected by the electrolysis process for purifying the water – so fewer chemicals have to be used,” emphasizes the city of Arnsberg. The lifting floor technology is also state-of-the-art and the controls can be monitored via video from the Nass leisure pool.

Bernd Lohr said the construction process would be very challenging for everyone involved, but he was confident that the project could be implemented within the plans and objectives, just like the new building in Houston. The planned construction period is about twelve months, so the new pool is expected to open in the fall of 2025.
