Protect red kites – with Rheinmetall anti-aircraft technology

AVES Wind was developed to maintain a balance between technological advancement and nature conservation. Using more advanced sensors and software originally designed for military air defense, the system reliably detects red kites and other protected bird species near wind turbines. If a collision is imminent, the system automatically sends a shutdown command to the affected wind turbine, thus protecting the red kite.

“The potential applications go far beyond the original military area,” says Uwe Lindenau, Sales Director Mission Systems at Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH. “The cooperation between Rheinmetall and ProTecBird is unique worldwide. Thanks to our software and ProTecBird’s technical know-how, you can not only protect unique protected birds such as the sea eagle or the red kite. The benefits for flight safety in terms of bird collisions with engines and aircraft fuselages in the aviation sector are also significant.”

Schleswig-Holstein: AVES Wind can protect the red kite

The effectiveness of AVES Wind was confirmed by extensive tests at a wind farm in Schleswig-Holstein. 237 red kite flight sequences were analysed and the system met the strict requirements for species protection. In addition, the Schleswig-Holstein Wind Energy State carried out these tests as part of a new test framework that could serve as a model for future nationwide approval procedures.

“We are delighted to have our AVES Wind anti-collision system recognised and proud to contribute to the energy transition,” commented Thorsten Heinzen, CEO of ProTecBird. “We have created a smart, connected system that leverages existing wind farm infrastructure and improves the efficiency and sustainability of wind energy production.”
