Kevin Costner's Horizon 2 has been pulled from its August release date.

Kevin Costner's Horizon 2 has been pulled from its August release date.

Kevin Costner's “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2” will not be released in theaters on August 16.

Currently, the movie is still showing in theaters, but it is not clear when it will be released now.

“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release ‘Horizon: Chapter 2’ on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first part of ‘Horizon’ over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max,” a New Line Cinema spokesperson said. diverse“We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the United States discover the film in its theatrical screenings.”

The film is scheduled to be released on PVOD on July 16. A Max release date has not yet been announced.

“The audience response to ‘Horizon’ and the enthusiasm to see our story continue in ‘Horizon 2’ has been incredibly gratifying. Kevin made this film for people who love movies and want to go on a journey. The support we’ve received from movie fans and theater owners as they experience the first chapter of this saga only serves to strengthen our faith in them and the films we’ve made, and we thank them for being part of the journey,” Territory Pictures said in a statement. “We welcome the opportunity to expand this window as we know it will only serve to enhance the viewing experience of ‘Horizon 2.’”

Costner spent a large portion of his own money to produce the Western. Last month, he said, “I know they say I got $20 million of my own money on this movie. That's not true. I got about $38 million on the movie now. That's the truth. That's the real number.”

On its opening weekend, the film, which had a budget of $100 million, grossed only $11 million and finished third on the domestic box office charts.

“I’ve lived with movies and what happens to them on opening weekend,” Costner said in an interview published the day “Horizon” was released. “If we put too much pressure on that, we’re bound to be disappointed. I’m really happy that ‘Horizon’ looks the way it’s supposed to look, and that’s what it’s going to look like for the rest of its life. That’s really important to me in this process.”

The West franchise is set to include four films, two of which are being shot back-to-back. The first film premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival.

In his review of the first film, diverse“Instead of presenting a Western epic in a coherent, strong arc, Costner delivers three hours of anecdotes, jumping between groups of characters, touching on situations that are dropped just as quickly, giving quick overviews of life in the field, and asking the audience, in many cases, to piece together the backstory of what they are seeing,” wrote Owen Gleiberman.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report the news.
