Created the lively soundtracks for the hit TV series “The Simpsons” and various soundtracks, such as “Batman,” “Planet of the Apes” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” conductor Joanne Valletta and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra have recorded Danny Elfman’s latest concert music with energy and spirit. His piece “Wunderkammer” delivers what the title promises: orchestral depth and breadth, dramatic lighting, and shimmering and sparkling shapes alternate in a wonderfully eclectic way. But nothing seems arbitrary in this colorful flow of sound. The changes always come at the right moment. So do the individual journeys through the orchestra. Just as Elfman has mastered the different rhythmic sequences, it’s no surprise that his drum concerto is also impressive – with energy and richness of color. Soloist Colin Currie is in his sensual and virtuoso element here. A refreshing repertoire, beautifully interpreted.
