Dortmund: The storm floods the stadium – but the world is only looking at it!

This has been the fixture of the European Championship so far – but before Turkey and Georgia (3:1) locked horns in a thrilling duel, all eyes were on other things. Due to the storm and seemingly endless amounts of rain in Dortmund, the match threatened to be delayed at times. Some experts even thought it was possible that the match in Dortmund could be canceled entirely.

Things went differently. But what many did not notice: Before kick-off, stadium staff did everything they could to divert water on and off the field. There is a video circulating on X that shows some very strange scenes from Dortmund. They make sure that foreign fans laugh at Germany.

Dortmund: The storm floods the stadium – but the world is only looking at it!

The fact that the weather turned so hot ahead of the crazy match between the Turks and the Georgians came as a surprise to many, despite the warnings. Not only was it a shower, it was raining so hard that the public viewing in Butstadt was canceled (more here). The actual fight took place before the game in the early evening: stadium staff quickly attempted to “sweep” the clumps of water from the field.

A video clip shows at least three men forcefully pushing water into a storm drain. A fourth bald man becomes unintentionally funny: in his haste, he first tries to tame the water with his foot. When that doesn't work, he resorts to a 'last resort': a wooden slat, which he then uses to 'push' the water away – as if he were paddling!

“German technology”

Despite all this effort in vain, these scenes spark funny comments among users. Here are some selected sentences about what happened:

  • “Obsessed with this guy who comes in and tries to help by putting his foot in the water…”
  • “Treading water is still fine. But then it comes with a wooden plank…”
  • “We all have a guy like that in every team project.”
  • “This is what they call 'German technology'!”
  • “Good thing it helped. Anything would have helped in this situation…”

We can only hope that upcoming matches in Dortmund will not be disrupted by these water blocks – and that the staff will enjoy a quieter working day…
