Review of Antonello Manacorda – Beethoven's Symphonies

First the individual episodes, and now the whole package. The Potsdam Chamber Academy and Antonello Manacorda have long since completed their cycle of Beethoven's nine symphonies, and now the edition as a whole comes as a follow-up. In light of the rich collection of good and distinguished recordings of these works from the past two decades, it would be bold to give a higher rating here. However, this edition remains impressive on a second listen: Manacorda's careful reading, his determination, the clarity of the vocal distribution, and the integrity. The orchestra plays modern instruments, but using natural trumpets and trumpets as well as smaller trombones. It follows its leader willingly, and even more so: with an audible desire to convey the power of this music. This creates a harmonious, comprehensive and enriching cycle that has its own justifications.
