King Charles was seen walking through the hospital hallway wearing a robe, while visiting his daughter-in-law Kate Middleton while they were being treated for surgeries in January, according to a report.
The 43-year-old Princess of Wales, who revealed her cancer diagnosis on Friday, regularly met the 75-year-old king at the London clinic, where Charles was being treated for an enlarged prostate and Middleton underwent abdominal surgery.
“When they were in the hospital together, there was a lot of walking down the corridor to spend time with her. He was encouraging and supporting her the whole time.” Times of London.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman said Charles had “remained in close contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the weeks” since then.
“The King has always had a close, warm and unique relationship with the Princess. She has great love and respect for him and his position,” a source close to Charles told the newspaper.
Charles and Queen Camilla said they “will continue to offer their love and support to the entire family during this difficult time,” according to Buckingham Palace.
The couple spoke regularly on the phone over the past few weeks as family tensions eased as both families learned of their serious medical condition, according to the Sunday Times.
Kate Middleton's cancer diagnosis: Everything we know so far
However, Prince Harry remains estranged from the family, and is said to have not learned of his sister-in-law's cancer until he found out about it on television news in California – at the same time the public learned, the newspaper reported.
He and his wife, Meghan Markle, provided a very brief statement wishing “health and recovery to Kate and the family.”
Harry made the trip to London in February to visit his father the day after he began treatment, but did not meet his brother, Prince William, according to the Sunday Times.
The princess's friends say she wanted to tell the public about her condition as rumors spread about her apparent fall from public view, fueled by a photoshopped photo of her family.
She announced in a video statement on Friday that she was receiving chemotherapy for cancer, although the type of cancer was not revealed.
“It allowed her to speak directly to an audience that was overwhelmingly always with her and her family and who do not take kindly to noise and gossip,” a close friend told The Times. “She was everything. She wrote every word of it, and it came together very quickly.”
